First-week routines that actually stuck after October

By Maya R., Grade 7 ELA teacher

I am collecting routines that survive the honeymoon period. The most useful examples include what you taught explicitly, what you stopped doing, and what you changed once students started testing the edges.

The routines that lasted at our school had a weekly reset ritual. Teachers spent three minutes every Monday naming the routine, modeling one example, and letting students practice once before content started.

The Monday reset is useful. I like that it avoids treating October drift as a discipline failure.

For younger students, I had better results when the entry routine ended with a visible choice: start the warmup alone or compare the first answer with a partner.
